Announcing the Crazy Dog Lady Sewing Challenge!

01/28/2015

Yay! It’s time to announce our latest pet project!

crazy dog lady 800 jpeg

Out of the ashes of Miss Crayola Creepy’s Cat Lady Sewing Challenge rose the sewing challenge for Dog Ladies!

Sophie-Lee and I have been drooling after dog themed fabric for a while and once Erin put us in contact with Carlee, the challenge of a dog lover’s dream came to fruition!

The Specifics

Who is hosting this?

The Crazy Dog Lady Challenge is being hosted by:

  • Carlee of Sew, Cook, Garden, Repeat!
  • Sophie-Lee of Two Random Words
  • Tanya of Mrs. Hughes

What kind of challenge is this?

This is a sewing challenge for dog lovers.  You could sew a garment (or whatever!) for yourself (or any other human!) using dog themed fabric or a garment for a dog (or both!).

How to I get involved?

  • Become a member of our Flickr group:  www.flickr.com/groups/crazydogladies and share your crazy dog lady me-made makes.  You can also discuss fabrics and patterns with other dog ladies and share your WIP and ask for any advice you might need.
  • Check out the hosts’ blogs for inspiration and information.
  • Use the hashtag:  #crazydogladysewing  so other crazy sewing dog lovers can find you and see what you’re up to.

When is the deadline to sew and share our dog lady creations?

Sunday, March 15, 2015.   EXTENDED TO MARCH 21, 2015.  That gives all of us dog ladies over a month to source fabric and sew a fabulous creation.

Are there prizes?

Why yes, there are!  Thanks to our generous sponsors:  Grey’s Fabric and Notions, Riley Blake Designs, By Hand London Patterns, BlueGingerDoll Patterns, Sewaholic Patterns, Netti Made It, Tuxedo Cat Buttons, Kerso and Mr. Zhuo.  Winners will be chosen randomly as this is a sewing challenge and not a sewing contest.  For more info on our awesome prizes, check out Carlee’s prize post.

sponsor logos updated

How does this work again?

  1. Sew a garment (or something else that’s cool) either out of dog themed fabric or for a dog.
  2. Post a photo of your garment to our Flickr group (or by email if you rather to Carlee:  carleeandrea.smith@gmail.com )
  3. In March, after we’ve gathered all of your awesome photos, we’ll post a dog lady gallery of us and our canine buddies!

What else do I need to know?

Carlee, Sophie-Lee and I will be posting dog lady inspiration posts showcasing dog themed fabrics we’ve found, patterns, and anything else that will help pay homage to our canine friends.  We’ll also share with you what we’re making for this challenge and anything else that might inspire you to join in!

Is there a Crazy Dog Lady button for my blog?

Why yes there is!  Copy and paste the code or image of your preference below.  If the code doesn’t work for you, right click on an image and copy the image URL.

I’m in! For some crazy reason I can’t seem to get the button to work on my blog. I’ve tried everything…shutting down and restarting three times and using a different computer. I’m baffled because I’ve had it work before for a sewalong.

I’m so sorry that you’re having a problem with the badge! If you it hasn’t started working for you, you could try right clicking the image and copying the URL or saving the image to your computer. You might also try the codes on Carlee’s post as blogspot may be forgiving than wordpress http://sewcookgardenrepeat.blogspot.co.uk/2015/01/in-which-we-announce-crazy-dog-lady.html

Oh fun! Too bad I’m horrible at ‘official sew alongs’. I’ve made loads of dog printed flannel pants before. Maybe I’ll get another pair done soon. But a dog print dress would be fun for vacation (might be a bit much for the office). g

I’m often horrible at them as well! I hope you can join us! Yeah… a dog print dress might be a bit too much for the office, but I have seen some lovely dog prints that are a bit more low key.

Yay!!! I know it’s silly, but I kind of feel like a phony if I did participate since I don’t actually have a dog and I do love cats a little more… but I really love dogs too. My mom really, really loves dogs, so that’s an option 🙂 I’m really looking forward to seeing the makes, anyway!

    • tanyamaile says

      January 29, 2015 at 10:41 am

You would definitely NOT be a phony!!! You can totally be a dog lover and not have a dog…. yet…. (because I’m sure you’ll have one someday 🙂 You can love both!!! And who wouldn’t want to miss out on prizes??!

awesome! I have the best vintage dog print fabric and I haven’t been able to figure out what to do with it. Hopefully this will motivate me, though I’m not much of one for a novelty print and this one is super kitchy and red, white, and blue. The blog is looking great!

Behind the Scenes on Instagram @tanyamaile

Instagram post 2193911738167031726_36737993 Wearing 1840's at the @dickensfair today. Laughing Moon 1840's round dress in reproduction 1840's cotton with a wool pelerine from the same pattern. Topped off with my newly made moire bonnet made with Lynn McMasters' 1840's/50's bonnet pattern. I've worn this dress many times for Gold Rush events at my museum, but I've never properly shared it. I was going to make a new dress, but didn't have enough time. #1840s #1840sdress #dickensfair
Instagram post 2193401180456157268_36737993 I finished one of the chatelaines that I started at Costume College this year. I actually finished the other one, too, but I had purchased some things for that one, and I don't know where I put them...
Instagram post 2191698490852229026_36737993 #TreeSkirtMakeAlong I am over a month past when I had planned to start this, but life got in the way. What's the deal? Make a tree skirt - any size - any way - and finish it by the 12th Day of Christmas. For those of you with a head start, please share yours with the hashtag so that those of us running behind can be inspired. So get your sewing machine, glue gun, iron, and/or scissors out and make away! I've gathered my materials and will get on my two skirts when I have a chance. Don't feel rushed (I'm trying not to be!). December just started! #christmastreeskirt #holidaytreeskirt #treeskirt

Instagram post 2180171743128275516_36737993 Hey all! I've been a bit MIA, but if you've seen some of my stories, you might know that I've been prepping/painting my house for weeks. Let me tell you -- this is the hardest work I've ever done in my life, so huge kudos to house painters. I've been mentally preparing for this for 2 years as I read and researched how to properly paint your house. My favorite videos being from @loweshomeimprovement with @monicamangin . I *almost* called in a pro to do it, but decided that I could tackle it. For one, my great grandma used to paint her two-story Colonial in New England herself when she was much older than me. Two, I almost felt like I had been in the TARDIS or that I had a time turner as I felt like I had already seen myself do it. I've been doing about 85% of the work as my husband is teaching/coaching all week. It's been a learning experience and although I grew up using power tools, building things and consuming way too much "This Old House" and "New Yankee Workshop" as a kid, but there were many things I've never done -- like used a power washer or a caulking gun. Our house is a 3500 sq ft midcentury raised ranch which was originally a much smaller 1-story house and remodeled and added on to exponentially by my grandparents. I have been working on it section by section and there are 12 sections. I should finish up the last 2 sections today with the first coat of paint. My process is power wash, scrape/sand, rinse, paint, with any repairs done before painting and 24 hours dry time between each part of the process. I'm doing the first coat on the sides first, the second, then the eaves and the trim. I have a fear of heights/falling, so I leave the high parts for my husband. Painting your own house looks really daunting and it is, but I guarantee you that it's in your skillset. It's just physically hard and it takes a lot of time, especially if you're doing most of the work yourself and using a brush and roller. There are five million large windows in my house and I didn't want to tape all of them off to use a paint sprayer, but boy -- a paint sprayer would have been much faster! Strangely, my favorite part of the process was to scrape paint! #diy #housepainting
Instagram post 2157014375095921166_36737993 My new barkcloth curtains are on brand. Also, sewing curtains sucks.
Instagram post 2155389334356757889_36737993 Is anyone interested in making a tree skirt or two with me? I have at least two I'd like to make this year and maybe a couple of mini ones. It doesn't have to be a retro skirt either. I'm making a HP one along with a retro one for an aluminum tree. Second pic is the one I made last year out of felt, remnants and trims from my stash. I didn't sew it, so calling it a "sewalong" might be misleading. There's no doubt that my glue gun will make an appearance again this year. 🤣
