Our Family Garden

08/19/2012

Well, it has been a while since I posted anything about our garden.  We have been very busy with it since we returned from our vacation to NY in June.  Got a bit of a late start due to the fact that I had to wait for my dad to plow it…..but everything is up and growing ….. well….. most things!  i’ve been battling gophers, birds and now deer to who keep eating our plants and veggies!  Plus, the heat…. we had a long heatwave of over 100 nonstop for about two weeks and that is finally over (at least we hope!) and they didn’t seem to like that too much….

Anyway…. here’s the garden about a month ago:

Our garden from the southeast end

We have summer squash in the pool on top and fall squash in the other one.

Drip tape irrigation on our rows

Our garden is irrigated with drip tape and has timers on it, which are two things I highly recommend for any size garden.

Our garden in August

This is how our garden looks now.  I find the evening the best time to take photos of it as there aren’t a bunch of shadows from the surrounding oak trees.  My little patch of melons took a beating from some wild turkeys, but since this photo was taken a couple of weeks ago, they have now come back.

Our garden from up top

Our tomatoes are green at the moment and now, the damn birds have eaten all of the leaves off our peppers and beans….. AND….have eaten every single corn plant that has come  up.  I just ordered some reflective bird tape to keep them away and will be replanting shortly.  I attended a workshop on year-round gardening a few weeks ago and learned a lot about having a garden that lasts year long.  Unfortunately, the didn’t talk much about all of the garden vermin and wildlife who eat all of your food!

Eggplant growing

And here’s some of our garden bounty!

Zucchini, golden egg squash, cucumber, peppers
