My Red Challis Birthday Dress

06/23/2013

I made this dress for my birthday back in May and of course, just now posting photos…. that I just took!  I guess I prefer making the dresses as opposed to taking time to take the photos!  And yes, I make a lot of dresses, but that’s because 90% of the time I wear dresses and that’s year round, too.  To me, dresses are the best part of a girl’s wardrobe as you don’t have to match anything but your accessories and your outfit is all put together for you.  So, if you wondered, that’s why I have so many dresses displayed on my blog. 🙂

This dress is made from one of my favorite patterns — Simplicity 2444.  I have made this pattern now FIVE times which is a record for me.  I am done making it now though… time to move on and try others.  Although, my next dress post will also be made from this pattern.  I have made nearly every variation of it and have made it with linen, silk dupioni, silk faille, silk taffeta and challis.  If you have not made it yet and you like to wear dresses with a retro vibe, definitely try out this dress!  It’s a great pattern, fast to make and will look good on you!

This version is made of a red/white/pink floral poly/rayon challis that I purchased from Fabric Mart a while back.  I fully lined this with dress black cotton batiste as the challis is just a little see-through.  This fabric makes this dress very drapey whereas when I’ve made it with the other fabrics, it’s a lot stiffer.  The challis and tha batiste combo also make this dress very comfortable!  It’s like wearing a nightgown all day!

This was the second time that I’ve sewn with challis and I quite like sewing with it.  Just make sure to prewash it!  They say that you should prewash most all of your fabrics before cutting, but I rarely do….. I knew that this one would shrink though if I didn’t, so I made certain that I did!  I think this fabric is called “midnight floral.”  As part of Fabric Mart’s Julie’s Picks Club, this one of the “picks” that I bought a while back.  I think it was only $3.99/yd!

This is really beautiful! I need to work on making up more vintage style dresses. I’ve been stuck in knit world lately, which is comfy but not nearly as classy!

This looks great! I do have that pattern but I haven’t found the right fabric for it yet. But the bold floral looks great so thanks for the encouragement!

Thanks, Nessa! This pattern seems to work in just about any fabric. My MIL made it in a cotton poplin for herself and a cotton eyelet voile for her sister and they both looked great.
