A Green Eyelet Sundress

05/19/2014

Hello there, friends!  I’m back with another dress for my spring/summer wardrobe…..

kelly green eyelet 1

The pattern I used for this dress is Simplicity 2886.  I bought this pattern for views c and d initially as I like wearing dresses like that when it gets hot here, but then I was considering which pattern to use with my eyelet fabric and this was sitting out, so I opted to go for version a for this particular dress.

[source: Pattern Review]

The fabric I used is a cotton eyelet with a circular design in my favorite color. 🙂  I saw this fabric at Joann’s a couple of months ago and loved it from the start, but it was on sale for 30% off and as I can get a better deal with a 40 or 50% off coupon, I waited until it was no longer on sale to get it.  Unfortunately, I waited and then it was gone!  So whilst on a visit to a Joann’s in Sacramento, I snapped it up and it made my day.  I’ve seen a similar green eyelet at Britex in San Francisco, but of course that one was about 3x as much as the one from Joann’s (and better quality…), but no coupon there! lol

I underlined the eyelet with white batiste and serged the seams.  I didn’t make any alterations to the pattern, although if I make this again, I’m going to get rid of the center back seam.  I’m not sure why it’s there in the first place, but if I had been paying attention to the position of the zipper when I was cutting out the pattern, I would not have that seam.  I know that I should read through pattern instructions before starting on it, but I usually don’t…. especially when it’s a dress.  With as many dresses as I’ve put together (which must be in the triple digits by now), I generally consider each pattern to go together in similar ways as they often are, so I guess that’s why I often don’t read through everything, which I’m sure I should be doing!

When I work with these colored eyelets I’m never too sure what color to line/underline them with.  I decided a white would show off the design well with this one.  For a future eyelet dress that’s on my sewing list, I’m planning on doing a contrast color for the lining and I’m really looking forward to seeing how that one will turn out.

This dress is so cool and light and comfortable.  It’s perfect for hot weather.  It was about 94 F the morning that I was taking these photos as we were experiencing an early heatwave last week.  Thankfully, it’s quite a bit cooler today and in the 60’s this morning, which makes me quite happy!

Rollie had to get in for the obligatory dog shot.

I’m looking forward to making my next version of this pattern with some contrasting fabrics.  Not sure when I will get to that as I have a lot of other dresses in my sewing queue that are waiting to be made!

Happy sewing!

Lovely job! I have this pattern but it has remained unmade for about 4 years now!

Thanks, Lindsay! I totally recommend it, although if you make this version, I’d suggest cutting the back bodice in one piece as the back seam is kinda weird!

Eyelet fabric is one of my favorite go to fabrics for summer. That green color really suits you and the dress is sewn wonderfully, as usual. Another great wardrobe addition for summer.

First, congrats on being featured on Colette with your pretty Laurel 🙂
I really like your new spring/summer addition! The pattern works really well for you, especally the pleats. I love the shape they gave in the back. I also like the pockets!

I love your dogggggie! Adorable! And the dress is really cool, too. I have an eyelet similar to this but in an awful color that has to be dyed over … I love this shade of green one the white underlining. There may be a touch of copycatting on my part soon.

I am so in love with eyelet now…. I have like four other eyelet fabrics sitting on my cutting table right now! Have fun with it and I look forward to seeing yours! I never think of dying fabrics…. that sure does open up possibilities, doesn’t it? 🙂
