A Red Bonnie and a Polka Dot Chiffon Skirt

12/10/2014

Hello, friends!

red polkadot 1

Oh, how I love polka dots!  And red!  Red is one of my colors and I don’t wear it that often.  I tend to stick with my beloved greens, but pretty much any color is one that I’ll wear.  The ones I tend to stay away from are greys and khakis as they make my olive skin look pale and sickly.  Bright colors brighten me up and always put a smile on my face. 🙂  So does my kitty, Snowball, coming down (meowing all the way) in the pasture to pose with me.

First off, this is the BlueGingerDoll Bonnie sweater — a favorite staple of mine.  This one is View C with the bateau neckline and 3/4 sleeves and made of a red cotton blend hachi sweater knit from Fabric.com.

It’s paired with Butterick 5285, a now OOP skirt staple.  Wardrobe builders building a wardrobe together!

I made View B of Butterick 5285 in a black/white poly chiffon from my stash and originally from Fabric Mart.  As I went with a chiffon, this skirt is lined with a black poly lining from Joann’s.

Yeah, I know, I need to press the lining

When I sew separates, I pretty much always make an outfit unless I’m making something to go with something else.  That way, I don’t have things in my closet that don’t match other items.

I took a lot of pictures of this outfit as I kept messing it up…. I was twirling a little with the skirt and then noticed that the lining wanted to show and the chiffon wanted float up.  I then noticed that I was showing my midriff as my sweater was moving up.  I actually need to make this skirt a little smaller as I’d rather it fit closer to my natural waist.  And since the Bonnie is a shorter sweater, it definitely needs a high waisted skirt if you don’t want to fiddle with it all day to not show some skin.

fiddling

That’s me fiddling with it in the above photo.  Best to have my skirt sit up a little higher unless I want to wear a cami underneath.

I really love to wear skirts and sweaters in the colder months, so expect to more versions here soon with different fabrics/patterns. 🙂

Note:  My copy of the BlueGingerDoll Bonnie pattern was complimentary as I was a pattern tester.

Great outfit. Love the colours and the spots. I try making garments that will work well with what’s already in my wardrobe, but I really like the idea of making an outfit that is entirely new 🙂

Thanks, Vanessa! I’ve been trying to do that, too, especially with skirts that don’t have anything to match them!

I love the idea of sewing an entire outfit rather than just separates – probably something I should do as I have a bunch of separates that don’t go with much else in my wardrobe

Yeah, that’s exactly why I started doing it this way. No point making something if it doesn’t go with something else! I guess that’s why dresses are perfect as you don’t have to coordinate them with anything else!

Loving the Bonnies you’ve made! It really temps me into buying the pattern but I’ve converted my Moneta into the crop length sweater. But Bonnie has all these lovely versions! I should probably just buy it. 😉 HI KITTY!!!

Thanks, Sylvie! I just made another Bonnie yesterday. 🙂 I haven’t yet tried making the Moneta into a crop sweater, but I’ve seen some really nice versions. Guess I should get some ribbing fabric!

Well I *may* have gone ahead and bought this pattern today. I mean, it’s 30% off right now.. and I “need” presents for myself… which makes this like pattern #5 I’ve gifted to myself this month. 😉

I love polka dots too, and I love your skirt! Your Bonnie looks like a great staple, which I need more of. Especially sweaters as we’re heading into cooler weather. I love your outfit and it’s a great idea to make an outfit when you sew separates. When I sew tops, I don’t like that I don’t have any handmade bottoms. I might have to take your approach!

I love you in bright colors! It really suits your complexion and you look very happy!

Thanks, Kathy! 🙂 I hated having a bunch of skirts/sweaters that didn’t go together, so I decided not to make anything that didn’t go with something else. Nothing worse than having nice things unworn in your closet!

You seem to really be coming in to your style and your colors. Not that I don’t love some of your earlier pieces, but lady you have been knocking it out of the park of late!

Thank you, Alicia! I tend to think you’re right. I like my recent makes and ones that are on my sewing list more than past things and I wear them more as well.

Red is your color! And I agree with the commenter below, I love the animal photo bombs!

Thanks, Erin! 🙂 It’s always nice when the kitty wants to be in the photos. She’s usually around when I’m taking pics as she likes to run around climbing and jumping.

That red looks really great on you–definitely add it to your “colors I should wear more often” list. I really like the whole outfit

How is the hachi sweater knit? I’ve eyed it in a few places but have heard from some posts that it can be pretty thin. Is it beefy enough for a stand-alone knit top like this?

      December 10, 2014 at 12:06 pm

Thanks, Michelle! Yes! I need more red, I know! 🙂

The hatchi sweater knit from fabric.com is thin, but it’s good for a slim fitting sweater like this and my nude bra does not show through it. It is akin to a lighter weight jersey, but not as light as a modal. I probably wouldn’t recommend it in white/ivory except for a cardigan.

I’m loving the animal photobombs! your furry babes are all really cute! Red looks gorgeous on you! I’m a green girl too, but I’m going to force myself into new color territory next year. Variety is the spice of life. 😀

Thanks, Michelle! I usually can’t keep the kitty away in photos. She’s there for about 90% of my pics, although she’s usually climbing trees and running on rocks. 🙂 I’m always drawn to any greens I see on fabric bolts and it would always be choice, but it’s good to have variety, isn’t it?

Hello, I’m a new follower! Phew!! Just had to jump through Disqus hoops to be able to post!
Anyway, love the red on you, it’s definitely your colour! A great make, I’m very tempted to get the pattern now…..
Looking forward to seeing what else you make!

Hi, Sarah! Nice to meet you! Yes, Disqus likes to do that to ya! I’ve tried other ways of commenting, but this one has the least amount of problems…

You would love this pattern! I’m making the other versions now. I love a pattern that gives you so many options! 🙂

Thanks, Andie!!! 🙂 I can’t look away when I see polka dot fabrics. And apparently I like a b/w polka dot skirt as I now have three of them! haha

You can never have enough polkadots in your life, even if they are the same colour! 😛
