Sewing Double: Navy Sateen Necklace Dress

04/6/2014

Well, I went and did it again!  I made another Butterick 5982!

necklace dress 1

And since this dress fit in with The Monthly Stitch April challenge, I really kinda feel like a bad ass to tell ya the truth.  It’s like finishing up my Master’s thesis long before the deadline. 🙂

So, I know that this is actually sewing triple as I already made this pattern in a linen and an eyelet, but hey, I’m still re-using the pattern, right?  So, yeah, to me it counts.

Obviously, I really love this pattern ….. I actually think I’m going to set it on the backburner for a lil’ while as I was just rooting through my patterns and fabrics and cleaning up my sewing room a bit and I have a lot of other pattern/fabric combos I want to make.  I think I’m becoming a bit of a fabric hoarder….. ;/

necklace dress 2

This version of my TNT Butterick 5982 is made of a navy blue stretch cotton sateen that I got from Fabric Mart a month or so ago.  I didn’t line the bodice of this version as I was shopping in my stash and didn’t have enough of a dark color of cotton lining to line it.  And then I thought: “Hey, I don’t really need to line this anyway!”  So I didn’t!  I finished the insides old school with seam binding on the neck and sleeves and pinked the seams.  Honestly, I used my pinking shears as I didn’t feel like changing the thread on my serger….. and since I finally just learned a couple of weeks ago to change the serger thread myself and rethread it, that makes me pretty damn lazy…. Anyway, I made this in about a day as I wanted to wear it the next day when I went to Britex Fabrics in San Francisco.  Pinking the seams was much quicker!

BTW:  this fabric attracts cat and dog hair like nothing else, so excuse any hair you see on it.  I don’t think I will be buying a dark color of sateen again as I’m going to have to carry a lint roller in my purse every time I wear this dress.  I have also washed this dress since I made it and wore it to SF, so probably not as neat and clean on the insides as it was pre-wash.

Perhaps you are wondering why I’m calling this the “necklace dress”.  Well…. I actually made this dress to go with a necklace.  My husband gave me that Art Deco-esque scarab necklace for Valentine’s Day and I didn’t have anything that it went with. So I made this dress. 🙂

The other thing that I did different with this dress was to make the bow belt in the pattern.  I really like this belt with the dress.  The weird thing is that it has velcro on the closure.  I think I’m going to take that out and put hooks and eyes instead.

I went up in the pasture intending to take some photos amid the wildflowers.  Unfortunately, the light was going in the other direction for that time of day, so although you can’t see too much of this dress in the next couple of photos, I still like them and am posting them. 🙂

With the exception of this dress being a magnet for animal hair and lint, I really love it and will be wearing it often, I imagine.  It’s sooooo comfortable and with it being a solid color, I can dress it up and down.

I’m feeling pretty accomplished.  It’s really nice to get back into a sewing groove. 🙂

OH! another B5982. Love it. This is one of my favorite dresses you have made. That bow belt is very cute. You could dress it up or down, making it a wardrobe staple. You have really inspired me.
    * I totally agree with Mads 100%.”especially after seeing your dress–I want an entire army of cotton sateen dresses! =)”

Gorgeous! Love the Dior dart detail on this pattern. I really need a navy dress now too!

Ohh i lovelovelove it! Looks amazing on you and I love the bow belt (I think I’m going to copy it one day).

I have a navy blue sateen and it DOESN’T collect animal hair, so don’t swear off all of them! And with the overlocker – while I know EXACTLY how you feel (I learned how to french seam, and bought my pinking shears, because I hated my old overlocker), I found this useful tip recently: http://www.handmadejane.co.uk/2014/03/overlocker-thread-tip.html. At the moment I only have one colour of overlocker thread so everything is overlocked with a grey-blue colour, haha.

That’s good to know about the sateen! I have some other yardages in my stash. The bow belt on that pattern is super easy. I totally recommend it! I learned how to finish seams in other ways long before I got my serger, so it’s kind of nice sometimes not to use it! Sometimes it’s a big pain…. as you know! 🙂

This is a gorgeous dress, and I love that it works so well with your necklace! And the belt looks amazing and crisp, too. Honestly, I think cotton sateen has got to be my next fabric purchase, especially after seeing your dress–I want an entire army of cotton sateen dresses! =)

PS: Ughhhhh pet hair forever. We should buy stock in whatever company makes those masking tape lint rollers!

Thank you!! I think I usually stay away from dark colors as I don’t want the dog/cat hair to show! My husband is always rollering himself. I guess I will be doing so as well when I wear this dress!!! I love cotton sateen. It’s so nice and easy to sew. Especially nice when there’s a bit of stretch. 🙂

Cute dresses! I love all your versions, but my favorites are the blue and mint green ones because they look so good with the necklaces you’re wearing. I want to check this pattern out… I’m eyeing the color-blocked version.

Thanks, Helen! I love that contrasting color skirt, too an plan to make it sometime.

This is a great dress! I love that you sewed a solid version. I can see it with a variety of different colored accessories and cardigans! Super cute! I’m working on sewing garments from the same pattern right now. It’s part of my attempt to have more wearable garments.

Thanks, Michelle!!! Enjoy the pattern and I can’t wait to see your version(s)! 🙂

I love this dress! Lately I’ve been thinking an LND would be even more beneficial in my closet than an LBD. 🙂 And the bow belt — adorable! Yes, anything I have in a dark color is salted with my pup’s hair, I’ve given up trying to fight it…

Thanks, Susan! 🙂 I think navy is the way to go, too!!!! Love my new LND!

I love that you’ve been making so many things lately! That is one versatile dress, though it’s too bad about the pet hair problem, especially in a house like yours 🙂 Oh, Britex. A work friend and I were once talking about what we would do differently if we made more money. I said I would buy mostly silks and wools, and she responded, “You could buy all your fabric from Britex!” That pretty much sums it up!

I think I’ve been catching up on my backlog!!!! 🙂 Yes! Only buying fabrics at Britex would certainly be luxurious! Although, if I were a millionaire, I’d still be looking for deals!

I’m feeling a little jealous. I so want to go to Britex. I want something better than Joann’ s and Hancocks.

I know what you mean! I went to britex on Thursday and then Joann’ s on Saturday and was like: “This fabric sucks!!” If one could only afford to shop solely at britex though….

I love the way you always seem to know so well what works for you. I made the challis skirt today and it’s totally unflattering. I’ve lived in jeans and t-shirts/sweaters for so long I don’t know what looks good on me anymore. I’m guessing I need to try on some ready-to-wear again before choosing more suitable patterns. :/

Thanks, Patricia! I think trying on different clothes helps a lot.
