The 1939 World’s Fair Dress

12/30/2018

Hi there, friends! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas [if you celebrate] and I wish you a prosperous new year! I intended to share my Christmas dress — which is made from the same pattern as this dress — but something yucky got on it at some point and stained it around the […]

The DLYG Mid-century Patio Dress

05/20/2018

Howdy Friends! Well, I managed to cross a “goal dress” off my list with this years’ Dress Like Your Grandma dress!  I bring to you my patio dress! The stars very much aligned to make this dress.  I discussed this more fully in my “plans” post.  I recently unearthed photos of my grandma in one […]

The California Poppy Blouse

01/11/2018

Howdy friends! I’m happy to share one of my favorite projects of 2017!  Yeah, I’m a bit behind on blogging, but slowly and surely I will get the projects that I’ve been making up on my blog.  I completed this blouse about 3 months ago, with about a month of embroidery on it.  Granted, I […]

A 1930’s Floral Caped Dress

09/18/2017

Hello lovelies! I am thrilled to share this dress with you that I made to wear to the Gatsby Summer Afternoon this year.  This is actually the first 1930’s dress that I’ve made!  I did make a 1930’s skirt two years ago, but that’s it for my 30’s sewing.  It seems quite odd that I’ve […]

The 1950’s Robin Hood Dress

08/17/2017

Hi friends! I’m so happy to share this dress with you!  It’s a dress that I not only love immensely, but one that means an awful lot to me as the fabric is not only vintage, but it is a treasure that I recently unearthed.  A couple of months ago, I started going through some […]

A Vintage 1950’s Rose Print Dress

09/26/2016

Hello, friends! I’m continuing to fulfill my Vintage Pattern Pledge and have sewn another of my vintage patterns!  This one is Simplicity 4667, a design from 1954 that also happens to be in my size!  Plus, I found this pattern uncut and for a steal on eBay.  Double win! I made the scalloped neckline of […]

The 1929 Pansy Dress

09/13/2016

How’s tricks, dames?  I’m extremely excited to fully share this year’s 1920’s dress for the Gatsby Summer Afternoon.  I’ve been sharing my progress in making this dress on Instagram and it was a labor of love.  The Gatsby Summer Afternoon is an Art Deco picnic held at the Dunsmuir-Hellman Mansion in Oakland, CA every September.  I […]

The “Frida Does the 1940’s” Outfit

02/25/2016

Hola, Amigas!  I started this outfit last summer and ta-da! It’s done 8 months later!  As I continue delving into my UFO sewing collection, this one is the latest to become a wearable garment, or in this case — an outfit! I used Simplicity 1261, a vintage peasant blouse and skirt pattern from the 1940’s. […]

A 1950’s Embroidered Peasant Dress

11/6/2014

Yay! After over a year from planning to finishing — I’m finally done with this dress! This dress was in my mind long before I found my vintage pattern.  I’ve been in love with 1950’s peasant dresses for a long time and now I have one perfectly suited for ME.  It’s like a dream that […]

Instagram post 2193911738167031726_36737993 Wearing 1840's at the @dickensfair today. Laughing Moon 1840's round dress in reproduction 1840's cotton with a wool pelerine from the same pattern. Topped off with my newly made moire bonnet made with Lynn McMasters' 1840's/50's bonnet pattern. I've worn this dress many times for Gold Rush events at my museum, but I've never properly shared it. I was going to make a new dress, but didn't have enough time. #1840s #1840sdress #dickensfair
Instagram post 2193401180456157268_36737993 I finished one of the chatelaines that I started at Costume College this year. I actually finished the other one, too, but I had purchased some things for that one, and I don't know where I put them...
Instagram post 2191698490852229026_36737993 #TreeSkirtMakeAlong I am over a month past when I had planned to start this, but life got in the way. What's the deal? Make a tree skirt - any size - any way - and finish it by the 12th Day of Christmas. For those of you with a head start, please share yours with the hashtag so that those of us running behind can be inspired. So get your sewing machine, glue gun, iron, and/or scissors out and make away! I've gathered my materials and will get on my two skirts when I have a chance. Don't feel rushed (I'm trying not to be!). December just started! #christmastreeskirt #holidaytreeskirt #treeskirt

Instagram post 2180171743128275516_36737993 Hey all! I've been a bit MIA, but if you've seen some of my stories, you might know that I've been prepping/painting my house for weeks. Let me tell you -- this is the hardest work I've ever done in my life, so huge kudos to house painters. I've been mentally preparing for this for 2 years as I read and researched how to properly paint your house. My favorite videos being from @loweshomeimprovement with @monicamangin . I *almost* called in a pro to do it, but decided that I could tackle it. For one, my great grandma used to paint her two-story Colonial in New England herself when she was much older than me. Two, I almost felt like I had been in the TARDIS or that I had a time turner as I felt like I had already seen myself do it. I've been doing about 85% of the work as my husband is teaching/coaching all week. It's been a learning experience and although I grew up using power tools, building things and consuming way too much "This Old House" and "New Yankee Workshop" as a kid, but there were many things I've never done -- like used a power washer or a caulking gun. Our house is a 3500 sq ft midcentury raised ranch which was originally a much smaller 1-story house and remodeled and added on to exponentially by my grandparents. I have been working on it section by section and there are 12 sections. I should finish up the last 2 sections today with the first coat of paint. My process is power wash, scrape/sand, rinse, paint, with any repairs done before painting and 24 hours dry time between each part of the process. I'm doing the first coat on the sides first, the second, then the eaves and the trim. I have a fear of heights/falling, so I leave the high parts for my husband. Painting your own house looks really daunting and it is, but I guarantee you that it's in your skillset. It's just physically hard and it takes a lot of time, especially if you're doing most of the work yourself and using a brush and roller. There are five million large windows in my house and I didn't want to tape all of them off to use a paint sprayer, but boy -- a paint sprayer would have been much faster! Strangely, my favorite part of the process was to scrape paint! #diy #housepainting
Instagram post 2157014375095921166_36737993 My new barkcloth curtains are on brand. Also, sewing curtains sucks.
Instagram post 2155389334356757889_36737993 Is anyone interested in making a tree skirt or two with me? I have at least two I'd like to make this year and maybe a couple of mini ones. It doesn't have to be a retro skirt either. I'm making a HP one along with a retro one for an aluminum tree. Second pic is the one I made last year out of felt, remnants and trims from my stash. I didn't sew it, so calling it a "sewalong" might be misleading. There's no doubt that my glue gun will make an appearance again this year. 🤣
